A generation of knowledge, held in one person’s head.
The challenge

Everything seemed obvious to him.

A family-owned European truck dealer - four subsidiaries, around fifty employees, a service radius of some 150 kilometres - was preparing to hand the company from its owner to his two sons. The value being handed over was not only the business, but decades of relationships and know-how that lived only in the owner’s head.

That was the difficulty. Everything seemed so obvious to the owner that he could not see what there was to teach, and the sons lacked the company-wide insight to know what to ask. Tacit knowledge and customer relationships risked leaving with him.

What we did

We mapped every activity, so it could be taught.

SAM mapped every activity in the business - its content, its background, and the skills it required. The map became a shared tool: something concrete for the father to teach from, and something the sons could read to know what questions to ask.

The same map made the company’s weak points visible, so the hand-over became an occasion to strengthen the business rather than simply copy it across a generation.

The outcome

The owner let go of his decision monopoly.

The father was able to reduce his own activities and share global responsibility for the company. The sons improved the working methods, earned the trust of their co-workers, and secured their positions in management.

What emerged was a new structure built on assets the company already had, and an owner willing to give up his monopoly on decisions - the real condition for a generation shift to hold.
